‘The Way We Were’ is the title song from the soundtrack of a movie of the same name. The movie and soundtrack were released in 1973. Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford star in the movie, which is a love story about 2 people who meet in college. The movie plot follows the path their lives take over many years, when after all their trials and tribulations, they bump into each other at the end of the movie and reminisce about the way they were.
Barbra’s version of the song with Lionel Richie was released in 2014 as part of her ‘Partners’ album where she collaborated on a collection of duets with a line-up of prominent male singers on a selection of 12 songs.
Lyrics
Mem’ries light the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored mem’ries of the way we were
Misty water-colored mem’ries of the way we were
Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were
Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were
Can it be that it was all so simple then
Or has time rewritten every line
If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me, would we, could we
Or has time rewritten every line
If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me, would we, could we
Mem’ries may be beautiful and yet
So many memories too painful to remember
The way we were
Can it be that it was all so simple then
Has time rewritten every line
If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would we, could we
Memories may be beautiful and yet
Much too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
Much too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
So it’s the laughter we will remember
Whenever we remember, the way we were
Whenever we remember, the way we were
The way we were
