Landslide was written by Stevie Nicks while staying at Aspen, Colorado surrounded by the snow-covered hills referenced in the lyrics. She was thinking that if all the snow came falling down the mountain, there would be nothing she could do about it. She was also thinking about her father who was in hospital for an operation. The song is about accepting that life is always changing.
In 2014, Stevie Nicks told the New York Times: “I wrote ‘Landslide’ in 1973, when I was 27, and I did already feel old in a lot of ways. I’d been working as a waitress and a cleaning lady for years. I was tired.”
This version by The Chicks is my favourite, and one of at least 5 versions.
The original version by Fleetwood Mac and some of the more interesting versions are shown below.
Lyrics
Climbed a mountain then I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life
Uh ah
Uh ah
‘Cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I’m getting older too
‘Cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I’m getting older too
Yeah, and if you climb a mountain and ya turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down
Well maybe
Well maybe
