My grandpa died a few years back. This song wasn’t played at his funeral, but shortly after the service, my family and I had this song on in the car. It still makes me cry when ever I hear it.

I have never been to a funeral where they played this song, but at my school, we had a purple heart ceremony for a Bill Youngblut, who killed himself six years after being in the war, and it took like 31 or 41 or 51 years just for him to recieve his purple heart, and his family recieved it after he commited suicide. I heard this song at the ceremony, and I lost it, because it reminds me of my Papa who died November 24, 2004.

This song is by Jo Messina, and it is a really good song for a military funeral, or someone who was really selfless and worked with other people a lot. Besides, its good for anyone really, because everyone a hero inside aren’t they?
Lyrics
I came by today to see you
I just had to let you know
If I knew the last time that I held you was the last time
I’d have held you, and never let go
Oh, it’s kept me awake nights, wondering
I lie in the dark, just asking why
I’ve always been told
You won’t be called home
Until it’s your time
I guess heaven was needing a hero
Somebody just like you
Brave enough to stand up
For what you believe
And follow it through
When I try to make it make sense in my mind
The only conclusion I come to
Is heaven was needing a hero
Like you
I remember the last time I saw you
Oh, you held your head up proud
I laughed inside
When I saw how you were standing out in the crowd
You’re such a part of who I am
Now that part will just be void
No matter how much I need you now
Heaven needed you more
Cause heaven was needing a hero
Somebody just like you
Brave enough to stand up
For what you believe
And follow it through
When I try to make it make sense in my mind
The only conclusion I come to
Is heaven was needing a hero
Like you
Is Heaven was needing a hero
and that’s you
