‘Footprints In The Sand’ was inspired by the poem/prose ‘Footprints‘ which describes a person’s walk with God throughout their life.
According to Songfacts, X-Factor and American Idol judge Simon Cowell approached Leona Lewis with the idea to write a song based on Footprints. Leona was enthusiastic about the idea. It was released as a Double A-Side single along with ‘Better In Time’ in 2008 as a charity fundraiser.
