‘Always On My Mind’ was written by Wayne Carson in 10 minutes at his kitchen table, but the 2 lines of the bridge “Tell Me…” were added with the help of the other 2 writers. The song has been recorded over 300 times by dozens of different performers. It was one of Elvis’s most popular songs of his career because it was released in March 1972, only a month after he separated from his wife Priscilla.
Other notable versions of this song were recorded by Willie Nelson in 1982 and the Pet Shop Boys in 1987.
Lyrics
Maybe I didn’t treat you
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn’t love you
Quite as often as I could have
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn’t love you
Quite as often as I could have
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
Maybe I didn’t hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I’m so happy that you’re mine
If I make you feel second best
Girl, I’m so sorry I was blind
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I’m so happy that you’re mine
If I make you feel second best
Girl, I’m so sorry I was blind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn’t died
Give me, give me one more chance
To keep you satisfied, satisfied
To keep you satisfied, satisfied
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
Maybe I didn’t treat you
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn’t love you
Quite as often as I could have
Maybe I didn’t hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I’m so happy that you’re mine
Maybe I didn’t treat you
Quite as good as I should have
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn’t love you
Quite as often as I could have
Maybe I didn’t hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I’m so happy that you’re mine
Maybe I didn’t treat you
Quite as good as I should have
